Yesterday I was waiting for my brother at the dentist and while I was waiting I was reading a magazine. In there was an article about cosmetics and how old some of it are.Three of them were especially interesting.
Have you known, for example, that mascara is 100 years old or why "Nivea" is called "Nivea"? - No? Then go on :)

Nivea appeared on the market 1911 the first time. Oscar Troplowitz deduced the name from the latin adjective niveus ( noun nix, nivis = Schnee) because of the colour as you probably could guess. The picture above shows how the first nivea 'can' looked like.
The first mascara was invented by the chemist T.L.Williams for about 100 years. He actually did it for his sister, but it was such a success that he incorporated the company "Maybelline". The name is the composition of his sister´s name (Maybel) and "vaseline" which was a component of the mascara. I think the story behind is nice so I´ll tell you it. Maybel was in love with a man who was in love with someone else. She did her best to get the man-so she put petroleum jelly on her lashes and eyebrows to enhance them. Her brother decided to help her and added carbon dust to her mixture which darkened her lashes and brows better. In the end Maybel got her man and T.L.William his company.

Oil Of Olaz was produced by the chemist Graham Wulff. His wife suffered from the creams at that time. So both developed a new cream which had a new texture and the typical pink colour and the smell.Together with his friend Jack Lowe incorporated Graham Wulff a company to produce and put it on the market. Nowadays Olaz is a well-known brand.
